Billie Joe Armstrong says the downside to wearing eyeliner is getting a sty.

The Green Day frontman is famed for his punk rocker appearance and regularly wears the eye product which he smudges for a grungy effect.

Billie Joe has dished out some advice to budding eyeliner wearers, claiming donning make-up isn't always fun.

"Watch out, 'cause some of that eyeliner sh*t will give you a sty. I'm having one right now," he told kerrang! magazine.

"The first time I ever wore eyeliner was 1990 'cause I thought I looked cool, like Mike Ness from Social Distortion. That was back when I watched [punk documentary] Another State Of Mind."

Billie Joe says sporting eyeliner is also a great way to attract attention from the opposite sex. The 40-year-old star joked asking females for a helping hand with application has always proved successful.

"It was always a good pick-up line with girls, too. When you were at shows you could ask them, 'Do you have any eyeliner?' They'd be like, 'Yeah'. 'Well can you put it on me?' And they were like, 'Yeah, sure!'" he laughed.
